Saving lives

I have finally realized that my calling in life is to save lives. For instance, I saved Nick's life just yesterday. I also saved a baby bird (I think). I am a healer. I am delusional. Let me 'splain... No, there is too much... Let me sum up...

I came out of the house yesterday to feed the fish (isn't that when all of my amazing discoveries occur?). I noticed a fluttering motion out of the corner of my eye, then I saw the baby bird in my pond (it had fallen from the nest). My big fear was seeing the beast come up from the depths and swallow him whole. I knew that I had to act fast, so I grabbed the net and scooped the little critter from the water. Seriously -- can you imagine a such a short life being extinguished in a flash by a prehistoric dinosaur which lurks beneath the depths?!!! Before that happened, I sprang into action. He was "safe..."

Ok, now what? I have a baby bird in a pool skimmer net. And???... I think... and I think... I have heard all of the theories -- "the mother bird will abandon the babies if they smell the human scent." What about the scent of a snapping turtle?! Don't they take that into consideration?!!! I saved the life of their baby, for crying out loud -- doesn't that count for something?! Of course it doesn't -- I am dealing with a bird. However, I needed to do something. I knew that the chances of my raising a baby bird were negligible. What to do? I finally grabbed it and waited for the inevitable bite -- it never came. I don't know if it was just spooked, or actually trusted me -- it was very docile. I decided to see if it could fly.. After several tries, I was able to get him/her to "fly" off my finger -- if the definition of "flight" is falling at 45-degrees while flapping wildly! I tried several times, and it actually got better. Ali said, "It looks like your remote controlled helicopter!" None of the other birds were still in the nest, so logic dictated that it should be able to fly -- they all did, right? I finally put him outside of the gate and decided that it was time for him to fend for himself. Five minutes later, he was gone. Either in the belly of a cat, or flying through the air with the greatest of ease (I am hoping for the latter). I did my best...

Sunday, we went to Fox Brothers BBQ for... you guessed it... barbeque. Kevin went nuts and ate more meat than macaroni and cheese, if that tells you anything. After saying goodbye to Brad, Dawn, Kevin, and Jerom, Ali and I headed to the Brick Store pub for a few adult beverages. We had a great time -- I even saw a guy (from afar) who I have seen for 20+ years in the cycling community. Scary! Well, that trip was a lifesaver, as it turns out.  Monday came, and Nick and I were kicking ass all day. Around 4PM, I realized that we were NOT going to be able to eat. So... I fed Nick some incredible BBQ. Another life saved! That is my job.

This week has been amazing. First of all, I had to fix Brian's bike. This wasn't just any bike, after all. Brian designed my logo for me many years ago. 'Twas the night before the due date, and I needed to true his Specialized Roval wheel. I have EVERY (and I mean every) spoke tool on the planet, yet I didn't have that one. What to do? I called Tom -- I had just sold his Roubaix. I knew if there was one person on the planet who would have the spoke wrench for the Roval, he would. Guess what? He did!!! Saved me!!! Now I just have to build his Santa Cruz Nomad -- small price to pay.

I sold a Blue RD 1.1 to Mike today -- a longtime customer. What a great guy! He actually just sold his software company and turned me on to Django. I mean, really -- what are the odds? I recently pick up Python (because Ali's brother recommends it to me), and the next thing I know, I am selling a bike to a regular customer who specializes in the stuff! It gets stranger by the minute!

Alan needs a plug? Here it is. Now get to work!

Sprocket photo of the day -- posing in the display case. What a ham!
